articles, shall be deducted from the sum due by the administration to the contractor.

Article 26th. In case the contractor has not put on the run on

the date of the 1st. of June, 1908, the two stea- mers provided for by Article 8, on the Canton- Bongkong line, a fine of a hundred francs per day of delay shall be applicable; if the delay exceeds three months the cancelling can be declared.

CHAPTER VII.

Length of the Concession.

Article 27th. The service is granted for a period of ten years

from the 1st. of July, 1902, for the Canton-Hong- kong line, and from the 1st. of March, 1903, for the Canton-Wuchow line.

CHAPTER V111.

Subsidy: Hay of Payrent.

Article 28th. The subsidy granted to the contractor is calculat-

ed as follows:-

Ten francs per Marine League steamed over for the Canton-Hongkong line:

Bight francs and thirty centimes per Marine League steared over on the Canton-Wuchow line.

The annual subsidy for the first line shall be one hundred and seventy-two thousand francs - the one for the Sikiang (Wuchow) line shall be fifty-four thousand francs per annum. Whatever may be the number of trips run on those two lines, the sub- sidy for each of them cannot exceed the figures stated above.

Article 29th. The payment orders for the subsidy will be signed

monthly by the administration on presentation by the contractor of the bills relative to the trips done under deduction of the fines which might have been declared in the cases provided for in these conditions.

The payments will be made in Canton in dollars at the official rate of exchange of the day when the payment order shall have been handed the contrac- tor.Bills must be ascertained before payment by the Government Commissioner or his substitute in Canton.

Article 30th. : In consideration of the subsidy, the contractor shall carry on the service mentioned in Article

1st.
